A true hidden treasure right in the centre of Essen
The Friedenskirche is an 'Old-Catholic-Church' in the Bernestr. in 45127 Essen. Located right opposite the Essen Synagogue it might in fact be easily missed even though it was originally built in harmony with the more famous building of the Synagogue. Today, though, the outward appearance has dramatically changed and I can hardly blame anyone who does not identify the building as a church - and a most beautiful church, for sure:
The interior is simply astounding: It is small and cozy and not exactly flooded with light. At first glance I felt reminded of oriental design and patterns but I had to learn that it indeed is mostly influenced by Art Noveou.
In accordance with old-catholic principles the present Pastor Ingo Reimer practices openness and hospitability and uncloses the Friedenskirche even in times way off the regular service-hours when someone shows interest. If you are somewhere near this place don't miss this astounding historical object.
