Yes this is actually the statue of the great great Leonidas who in 480 b.c. fought against 1.000.000 (!!) Persians with only 300 of his soldiers. The statue is 18 kilometers from Lamia away, on the highway from Thessaloniki to Athens. You have to stand there infront of him to unterstand the unique feeling... Where ever you stand, you think, he can watch you!

@paokis I think that Leonidas was a brave man and he fought against many Persians. BUT 1 million is ridiculous. I know Herodot tells us that it has been 1 million, but he likes to distend. And on the other hand Leonidas had his 300 Spartians and beside this he was supported by 700 Thespiens.

But nevertheless: great man, good shot smile_smile

I think the word ridicules is a litlle impertinent! If you have a classical education you can read in the original language what different history writers at that time wrote about this fight! http://users.sch.gr/ipap/Ellinikos%20Politismos/ma xes/thermopyles.htm or http://users.sch.gr/ipap/Elliniko s%20Politismos/maxes/thermopyles2.htm Herodot didnt wrote anything about 1 mil. but about 800.000 but also 1.200 persian war ships. For the Hellenes fought Leonidas with 300 soldiers, 500 soldiers from Tegea, 500 from Mantinia, 120 from Orchomeno (Prefecture of todays Arkadia), and 1000 from the rest of Arkadia, 400 from Korinth, 200 from Fliunta and from the Mykines 80 soldiers, 700 from Thespies and 400 from Thiwa. So they where not only 300, but the persians where (historicaly proved, Herodot, Thiodor from Sikelia and more other history writers) near to 1.000.000. As you know this area has a tradition of resistance for Hellas: 279 b.c. 24.000 Greeks fought against 170.000 Romans at 1941, 150 Greeks and Australians fought against 2.500 German-Nazis against the invasion of Hellas.
