The history of the Basel carnival lost in the mists of time. This has contributed to the devastating earthquake which 1356 our city and thus largely destroyed their documents.
1376, the day before Ash Wednesday, was held at the cathedral square instead of a tournament in which the citizens of the Knights could provoke. The citizenship took up arms and distributed the precious people, of which the tumult four died As a result 12 people were beheaded and Emperor Charles IV withdrew the city through imposition of the Reich Eight to protect the Roman German Empire.
