The RESTAURANT KAZAVITI is located right in the centre of the small mountain village Megalos Prinos. It took us about 40 minutes drive by car to get here from our base – which means that we pretty much had to drive half-way around the island just for some lunch. Was it worth the hassle? Well, let’s find out:

I have already written some lines about Megalos Prinos, so I will spare you this part. Just be reminded that this mountain village itself is well worth a visit if you are in the area (which, being on Thasos, you always are).

The RESTAURANT KAZAVITI is one among three or four restaurants in Megalos Prinos and can be found on the square right at the heart of this marvellous place. Having reached Megalos Prinos, the way up to the restaurant is steep and some people might prefer to drive up the cobblestone-road right to the small parking-lot next to the restaurant (be assured, it can be done). The cars are in the shades here and walking some steps up to RESTAURANT KAZAVITI you yourself are seated under the leaves of two gigantic oak trees which foundations have split open many years ago. Today these vast old colossuses serve playing children as junglegym and photographers as splendid background for gripping family-pictures.

I can’t say if making reservations at RESTAURANT KAZAVITI is necessary. It might be in the high-season until August 15 and I will give you the contact-data later on in case you want to form an own opinion and prevent waiting on your arrival. We were there in late August and the owner’s wife herself greeted us friendly and showed us our places. The RESTAURANT KAZAVITI is today a family business run by a young chef and his pretty wife (who you see in the picture). The place has undergone some changes within the last two years and you can tell that the new owners are investing a lot to make their guests’ time at their place worthwhile. Even before our orders were taken the waiters brought us fresh water from the village’s natural fountain and were readily answering our questions for recommendations on what to eat.

The RESTAURANT KAZAVITI takes some proud in their homemade macaronis. I myself, being a fan of noodles in all variation could (of course) not resist ordering those. In line with the given advice I chose chicken, a garden salad - and other members of our group ordered pork with French fries, Tzaziki, etc.

The time it took for our meals to arrive was pleasantly short (even taking German standards into account). My chicken was okay. Personally I like it more cross then it was served but that is just my liking. Other group-members loved their chicken exactly the way it came. My macaronis were simply delicious and even today I still wish there would have been some more. The same goes for those of us who ordered pork: The meat was wonderful but the portions themselves were (not exactly small but they were) not huge (either). Unfortunately, there appears to be some general notion in cuisining (again) that less is more. This is something I also experienced in Paris recently and some time ago in London (where - after some bites - I rather cheerfully noted that the waiters had not brought more, to be honest).

So – am I going to pay RESTAURANT KAZAVITI another visit some day? Yes, I will! From my point of view this little restaurant is a definite recommendation smile_suprised and well worth the time you drive up into the beautiful mountain-region. smile_pipe
