How does the voting system work?

First a little remark about the voting in general: If you give one point to a photo that means the picture is really bad, if you give it a 10 it means that this is one of the best pictures you have ever seen.

You may be uncertain of what a good picture is. But whether you like a picture because of its significant content regarding the related spot or because of its artistic value, is totally up to you.

Every photo that is uploaded starts with 10 votes at 5 points. The reason for this system is that a photo should not get 10 points with just one vote.

So give us your vote and separate the wheat from the chaff ;-)

Oh and one other thing: Pictures - of course - can drop in the average-score: Imagine a fine picture has got an average score of 8.000 points. Any score of '8' will not change the average-score. BUT just a single '7' at this point of time will reduce the average.
The more number votes a picture gets the less impact will a single vote have on the average-result.

What does place of interest, landscape and city mean?

City stands for itself. It means any kind of city, town, hamlet or even abandoned village.

A Place of Interest is a regional spot that might be interesting to visitors. The place of interest has to be OUTSIDE of a city. For example Stonhenge IS a place of interest, the Sydney Opera in contrast to that is NONE, as it rather would be affiliated with Sydney.

Landscape is supposed to comprise all those connected natural areas that are known for themselves. For example the Scottish Highlands are a landscape in that sense, just like the Rocky Mountains or the Everglades are. Just as well, mountains, massive rocks or (rather small) islands are landscapes. If your picture was taken in a city or a place of interest within a landscape, it is rather adjoined to the city/place of interest.

Oh God! I made a spelling mistake... It's NOT 'New Jork'

Don't worry. Stay calm. This can be fixed. Just drop the Operator a note to change this (or any other slight imprecision) and it will be done ;-)

Wouldn't it be helpful to restrict the quantity of pictures members might upload in a month? Some users put in their whole private collection....

We have given this phenomenon some thought and finally decided against restrictions regarding the number of photos. The crucial reason is that we do not want to force our understanding of what IS part of a country's culture and what is NOT (or mainly of private interest) onto the users. The opinions might strongly differ, but we are pretty certain, that the community will find ways to deal with photos they don't like ;-) Inappropriate pictures of violent, sexual or racist content will of course be deleted!
